Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I say "happy" as we have now come to celebrate the weekend as the unofficial start to summer and as a weekend to travel, barbeque, swim, party, frolic and have fun! However, we should never forget the real reason of this holiday weekend. Memorial Day is a US federal holiday wherein the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces are remembered. It is celebrated every year on the final Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. Okay, enough of a history lesson. I know a lot of you are traveling this weekend and having a celebratory time. Las Vegas, Pensacola, Palm Springs and many other locations are destinations this weekend for many of you. Travel safe! Have fun! And remember, there is a special schedule at Crunch on Monday. The gym is open from 7:00am until 7:00pm. There are only TWO (2)! Rides on Monday. One is my Red Line Ride at 9:30am. The other is at noon with Brian. I hope to see you Monday! And don't forget, the annual Extra Special Sexy Spin in honor and support of our friends taking part in the California AIDS LifeCycle Ride will be on Tuesday next week instead of its usual Thursday. It will be the first class back after a holiday weekend, so please make the extra effort to be there and help us send off our friends on the amazing, much needed and life changing event which takes place June 1-7, 2014.

I had one request for this morning's Sexy Spin. One request, but it helped shape the entire class. Sometimes, the smallest thing can make the biggest difference. In class, I talk a lot about control. This is in addition to all that I say about commitment, form, pace, resistance, movement, change, goals and results. As I mention, when you are in control, the smallest change you make can make a big difference! That's why I so strongly encourage you to commit to proper form while challenging yourself as much as possible by committing to resistance and the pace as dictated by the beat and the rhythm of the chosen music. Commit. Make that change. Challenge yourself. See the results. Get closer to realizing your goals. We reached back for some powerful and "old school" music to push us that much harder this morning. To motivate us to reach for more and higher goals. To reach a faster pace. To reach more challenging levels of resistance. And to have more fun while doing it! It is great to be back! Commitment. If you have taken even just one of my classes, you hear me talk a lot about commitment. It takes commitment to make a change. Change doesn't just happen. At least not the type of change that you really want or desire or commit to work towards. So I ask for commitment. Commitment to proper form on the bike. Commitment to the various levels of resistance on the bike. Commitment to the appropriate pace for each activity during a Ride. Commitment to the workout of which the entire class is a part and to which the entire class contributes. And it also includes commitment to show up. Yes, show up. Many times, the bikes are reserved in the new CRUNCH sign-up program. And many times, some of those bikes sit empty during class. Even (and especially!) in the front rows! Many times, a member doesn't attend the class as it is believed to be sold out because those bikes are reserved. This is not an ideal situation. So I am once again asking for your commitment. If you sign up for a bike, show up. Or if for some reason you can't make it, cancel your reservation as soon as possible. Let someone who really wants to commit to making a positive change in their way of life, in their fitness level and in their overall physical and mental well-being be allowed to be a part of that Ride. Don't be selfish. Be committed. Be determined. Be special. Be who you are. Just don't be rude. Thanks! In good health! tommy

Music is such a vital part of an indoor cycling class. I try to play a variety of genres without going to far from the mainstream. My goal is for everyone to know (and hopefully like) at least one song in every class! I carefully choose each song for a particular activity in class. I make my decisions based on the beat while hoping to find songs that have a motivational build or sound. And the music is so very important to the energy and the fun that can make a class rise above so many ordinary classes and make it extraordinary! That is my goal. To provide an extraordinary class every time. So I spend so much time on preparing the music, but while in class, I also spend a lot of time on the other aspects of class that I feel are also so important. Form, commitment, energy, focus: these are four things that can also help each rider take their workouts to the next level. Go above and beyond the ordinary. Be extraordinary! Ride with Tommy! Group fitness classes produce an energy that helps propel you forward. By committing to the form, pace, resistance and movements in an indoor cycling class, you are helping create that energy. And we all need that energy. The music helps. The instructor helps. But the energy that is created when so many people gather in a room to do the same thing (at whatever level they are...it doesn't matter...but the commitment does matter!), can help move each of us closer to obtaining our goals. Whatever those goals may be. And we all have different goals. They may appear alike in general, but each of us is different. Our bodies are different. What we expect to get out of a Ride is different. So with so many differences, you wouldn't think that so much can be accomplished by working together. Well that is exactly what happens! So I ask each of you to commit at the beginning of class. Commit to making a difference. Commit to making a positive change. How much you commit is up to you. What you accomplish is definitely individual. But together, by creating that positive energy, we can all do so much more! So thanks to everyone for being a part of the Ride with Tommy! this morning! Birthday spins are awesome! Happy birthday this morning to Joanna Wilson! So today was a special Valentine's Day Red Line Ride. If you didn't know already, the Red Line Ride is a heart rate monitor based class where you wear a heart rate monitor and see your heart rate projected on a screen at the front of class. It is a highly visual class with numbers and colors to help educate and motivate you to work harder as you learn more about what your heart does as you workout. It is a really fun class! Crunch was the first in the world to offer this type of class 5 years ago in January of 2009 with the Suunto Fitness Solution as the technology! And I put together a special track list to celebrate Valentine's Day, a day long associated with affairs of the heart, as we participated in this week's Red Line Ride, where we can monitor the physical activities of our hearts!

Also, I continued to choose a random winner each week to Celebrate February Resolutions, a commitment to change, and help raise awareness for a group, cause or movement that is trying to create a positive change in the world. Last week, in Saturday's Ride with Tommy!, I gave Cole a Crunch gift bag as we gave a shout out to the Uprising of Love organization which was created by Dustin Lance Black, Bruce Cohen, Linda Wallem and Melissa Etheridge. Uprising Of Love was created to support the LGBTI community in Russia and to raise awareness among the international community regarding the harrassment and violence the LGBTI community faces there in Russia. I also played the song, "Uprising of Love" written by Melissa Etheridge specifically for the organization. Well, I am a host of the Los Angeles Awards Dinner for the Family Equality Council which held their event at Universal Studios last Saturday night. Melissa was a special guest there and performed the same song that I played in class that morning! Coincidence? Fate? Universal synergy? Well, that leads me to this weeks special organization announcement. Ride with Tommy! regular, Elke, won the drawing for a Starbucks gift card as I announced that the Family Equality Council was this weeks special organization! The Family Equality Council connects, supports, and represents the three million parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender in this country and their six million children. The Family Equality Council is working to change attitudes and policies to ensure that all families are respected, loved, and celebrated. There will be a special schedule on New Year's Day. Be sure to check the schedule before taking class on New Year's Day. I will not be teaching, but I believe there will be two Rides: the first one will be at 12:00noon, and the second one immediately following at 1:00pm. I will be back on the bike early Thursday morning, January 2, 2014 for the first Ride with Tommy! of 2014. I hope to see you then as well!

This morning's class was a great big celebration! Not only did we celebrate the fact that we were all physically and mentally there in class and able to work out and challenge ourselves as much as we possibly can (which is a fact that we should never take for granted!), we also celebrated some lifetime milestones of a few Ride with Tommy! regulars! Happy birthday to Maureen! Maureen has celebrated at least 8 birthdays with the Ride with Tommy! And she has even celebrated a few anniversaries of her 36-year marriage to her husband Larry with us! And speaking of anniversaries, Phil and Allison will be celebrating theirs before too long as they just recently were engaged! How great is that!?!? So this morning's track list intrigued me. I have been focusing on all new music lately after my month full of Awesome '80s Wednesdays in August. And there has been so much new and great music released just recently. However, I took a look at this morning's track list and while all the music is new, the artists sure provide quick an eclectic mix of today and yesterday. From the perennial favorite, Cher, duetting with the larger-than-life life-force, Lady Gaga, to the oh-so-controversial Miley Cyrus to...dare I say it?...wait for it...THE VILLAGE PEOPLE?!?! Yes, The Village People have released a new song! And it is kinda fun! There is even Michael Jackson (with one of his last recordings before he died) duetting with Justin Bieber! Now, that duet obviously happened via technology and I believe was available by a leak online for a very short period of time. Yet, I have it here for you today! (shhhh!) Finally, I have also included the new single from a former Crunch member and "Ride with Tommy!-er", Emrhys Cooper. Emrhys is an amazing talent and talented in so many ways!
