Tomorrow is Spirit Day 2022! I know, it seems like the month of October is full of special days. Well, if you ask me, that makes October that much more special! We have recognized National Coming Out Day on October 11th. We help raise awareness of Breast Cancer and the continued need for research the entire month by "Wearing Pink, Playing Pink, and Thinking Pink!" So today, I once again played some of my favorite Pride songs as Spirit Day aims to create awareness for the bullying and harassment that the LGBTQ community faces - especially our LGBTQ youth. Playing some of my favorite Pride songs is intended to remind those that identify as LGBTQ that it is indeed something to be proud of. Yes, unfortunately, living out and proud often draws negative and unwanted attention. But as it is often said, if people have a problem with an LGBTQ individual, the problem is more with them than the LGBTQ person. Of course, I do not want to be naive to the point that if a person is bullied or harassed just because of their orientation or identity, it is indeed a problem for all of us. Because it is also said that none of us are equal until we are all equal. But the primary idea behind Spirit Day is to let LGBTQ youth know that we have their backs. The organization, GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), has resources available to be downloaded. You can visit their website and take the Spirit Day pledge! Wear purple! Donate! If I can do even just a little bit to help raise awareness of breast cancer or support LGBTQ youth in my little spin class in my little way, then I am more than happy to do it. So I am more than happy to play Pride songs to show support for the 2022 Spirit Day tomorrow, Thursday, October 20, 2022. I'll be wearing purple. I hope you will, too! And don't forget, it is less than two weeks until Halloween!

It's almost the middle of the month already! October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Historically, Crunch has promoted a campaign called, "Play Pink, Wear Pink, Think Pink!" to help raise awareness for breast cancer treatment and research. We're not actually running this campaign as a corporation or even as a local club this year, but you know me! There's always a reason to celebrate! And when you can do it by helping raise awareness of a much needed organization, then sign me up! So in this morning's class, I had the pleasure of playing Pink (which is absolutely not difficult for me at all because I absolutely love her!) as well as many other pink songs! Whether it was the word pink in the title or lyrics of the song or in the name of the artist or group, pink was definitely in! As you can see from the picture, I also wore pink (I bought this t-shirt last year specifically for this class!) So I think it is quite obvious that I was thinking pink! Thanks to Nick for doing such an amazing job in his first class back to Ride in 6 months! I will be doing this again this month, so please join me! In class, in raising awareness, in thinking pink! I hope to see you soon!

Today is National Coming Out Day, an annual LGBT awareness day observed on October 11, to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in "coming out of the closet". National Coming Out Day was inspired by a single march. 500,000 people participated in the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights on October 11, 1987, generating momentum that lasts to this day. First celebrated in the United States in 1988, the initial idea was grounded in the most basic form of activism being coming out to family, friends and colleagues, and living life as an openly lgbt+ person. The founders belief was that homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance and that once people know that they have loved ones who are lesbian or gay, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views. So I chose to play several songs in today's class that I often play during June, Pride Month. My hope is that everyone who chooses to come out makes that decision on their own and in their own way. Coming out is such a personal journey and is different for everyone. Because we are all different. Today is not a day in which you try to "out" someone, but rather, to let anyone in your life know that you are there for them, in support of them, love them, and will fight to change the world so that it is a better and more equitable place for all of us. Because ultimately that is what we want. Equal rights. Not special rights. Equal rights. So that we can all live in peace, with love for everyone and understanding by everyone!

Well, it's already October! And in October, in keeping with a campaign that Crunch used to run for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I still like to "Play Pink! Wear Pink! Think Pink!" For the month of October, I will be playing songs from Pink, which is not difficult at all since I absolutely LOVE her! I will wear pink...shirts, socks, underwear...anything to help me...Think Pink! Keeping in mind that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I'd like to help raise awareness in any way possible, even though it is such a very small endeavor on my part. Like they say, every little bit helps! So if I can help in any way, then I am grateful for the opportunity! So for more information on Breast Cancer Awareness, just click on the link www.breastcancer.org or here. In addition, I have a very good friend in Houston that would like everyone to also remember that September was Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month (GCAM). For more information, click on the link, www.foundationforwomenscancer.org/events-courses/gynecologic-cancer-awareness-month/ or here. So, yes, September was last month already, but as I mentioned above. Every little bit helps. Every little bit of awareness raised can be a big help. And just like I say in class when turning up the resistance, "A little bit can make a big difference!" It is a well known fact that exercise, taking care of yourself, and being your healthiest self, can "reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and CANCER and lower your risk of early death by up to 30%." 30%! (This quote is from the National Health Service (NHS)(www.nhs.uk) in England.) So let's make a big difference! Take care of yourself. Stay healthy. Stay active. Take a spin class. Play Pink. Wear Pink. Think Pink. Ride with Tommy!
