It would be so easy to stay in bed, sleep in, cuddled up beneath the covers, curtains covering the windows blocking out the bright, shining sun outside. OR...you could spring out of bed, race to the gym, and Ride with Tommy! Thanks to everyone that did just that. We set our thresholds. We worked to get back up to that threshold level that we worked so hard to set. We challenged ourselves at the different levels below and at our thresholds. We used percentages, color zones, watts, power, rpms, class rankings and distance to push ourselves to new levels. We worked hard. We could see it on the screens. We could feel it in our bodies. We knew it in our minds. We came. We saw. We felt. The workout was awesome. The results felt even better. We knew we had accomplished something. We were proud of our accomplishments. Now we are challenged to try even harder next time. This is amazing! Thanks again to everyone that was a part of this incredible experience this morning. See you Monday morning at 9:30am for the next Threshold Ride @crunchgym on Sunset and @ridewithtommy. Until then, in good health, tommy

Happy Back To The Future Day! Today, October 21, 2015, is the day that Marty McFly travels to in the future in the movie, "Back To The Future II". "Back To The Future" was (and is!) one of my favorite movies! So I thought it only appropriate that I played a video from the movie's soundtrack in today's #totalrequestride. I chose "The Power Of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News. What a great song! What a great movie! What great memories! And what a great class this morning! Thanks to everyone that was there and worked so hard! Thanks for challenging yourself and trying to reach new frontiers past your current (real or perceived) boundaries. Yes, we worked today to improve our future! We worked to make our future happier, healthier and longer! There's no time to work on improving your lives and your future than the present. So as I often say, take advantage of today. Why put off until tomorrow what you can do today? And how great is it that what you do today can improve your mental and physical health and well-being tomorrow and everyday thereafter! So let's do this. Let's commit to indoor cycling as a method of improving the way you feel and the way you look at life. Commit to The @ridewithtommy! I hope to see you in class soon! Until then, in good health, tommy

It's been a week since I've posted any commentary about any of the Rides with Tommy! Life gets crazy sometimes, doesn't it? I can't believe it is already the middle of October! Here in Los Angeles, we have had probably TWO (2) days where the temperature dipped below the 90s! So for those 2 days, it sure was nice to feel like the fall season that we are in! And Halloween is only 2 weeks away! That means the grocery store aisles are filling up with candy! Yes, there will be a plentitude of sugary sweets within our very reach in the next few weeks. And then shortly after that, Thanksgiving will arrive with its bounteous supplies of food and especially desserts! And then Christmas! And Hannukah! The days will be getting shorter. The time we have in the day to get everything done will seem to be getting shorter, too. So now is the time to carve out of your busy schedule that time that you so need to take for yourself. For your body. For your health. For your peace of mind. For your overall mental and physical health and well-being. It is vitally important! Don't sacrifice what you need to be the best you possible! And the @ridewithtommy @crunchgym on Sunset is here to help you with all of that. Just show up. We'll do the rest. It's that simple! Commit to it. Just do it. Get through it. Make the most of it. Make a difference. Make a change. Make a positive change. See the results. Ride with Tommy! I hope to see you there soon! Until then, in good health! tommy

One of my new favorite epic videos is the mashup of 100 movie dance scenes set to the song, "Uptown Funk" by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars! So much fun to watch! So much energy! Someone after class said that watching the dance scenes reminded them of how great of an exercise dance is. Yes it is when you actually do it. However, just watching it can also provide you with an uplift in energy or an increase in a positive, good mood. That is what I'm going for in the @ridewithtommy's #totalrequestride @crunchgym - Sunset. Increased, positive energy. A better mood. Even more desire for change. Even more willingness to make a positive difference. Changing your body. Changing your mental outlook. Improving your mental and physical health and well-being. Improving your quality of life. Extending the length of that quality life. Everyone knows that exercise is good for you. But does everyone realize that you can make such a tremendous difference with just one spin class?!?! You can! Just do it! Commit to it. Push yourself through it. Don't take it lightly. Don't take your ability for granted. Work to maintain and even improve your current level of fitness. Ride faster. Ride harder. Ride longer. Live better. Live longer. Live happier. Spread that happiness and positive energy with the people around you. Not everyone makes the commitment to working out that you do. Not everyone understands all the great things that happen when you workout. Not everyone benefits from all the amazing things that are created in a spin class. So pay it forward. Carry the positive energy around with you all day. Share it with the people with which you work and live. Share it with people you meet. Share this class with a friend! We have guest passes at the front desk and online at www.crunch.com! Or share it with your enemies! Make them go through the hard work, challenges, sweat and ultimately accomplishments that you do! Make your life better. Make the world better! Ride with Tommy! I hope to see you in class soon! Until then, in good health! tommy

A dance video from "Jerry Springer: The Opera"?!?! Is that even a thing? Yes it is! #jerryspringertheopera It was a big hit in London. Not so much here in the States. But from it comes this amazing song. One of my favorite spin songs. And a favorite of many of my Ride with Tommy! regulars! In the musical, it is about a woman pursuing her life's dream of becoming a exotic dancer. However, it quickly became an unofficial anthem for the gay community having dealt with the AIDS epidemic. "I'm tired of laughing and I'm tired of crying, I'm tired of failing and I'm tired of all this trying, I wanna do some living, Cause I've done enough dying, I just wanna dance, I just wanna f***ing dance!" The song itself starts slow and builds to a wild and fast pace. The video compiles snippets of dancing throughout a history of movies and television. It is so much fun! I love the video. I love the message. I love the song! And what a way to start this week's #totalrequestride! Then we followed this epic video with a new song by MAX, whose songs I have been playing for a while now. He is an actor and singer from the Nickolodeon world, modeled with Madonna on a Dolce & Gabbana campaign, and has become a Youtube star along with his cousin Kirk Schneider. I've played several of their covers as cool downs. But this song and video are a lot of fun and provide a great uptempo beat which is great to ride to! And then you can never go wrong for high energy and fun with a Black Eyed Peas video, in this case, "Pump It". Then after we finished playing the videos in the beginning of class, I tried to keep the fun and energy going with the remainder of the track list. And the riders in class certainly brought the energy, focus and determination to make an amazing difference today! If you haven't participated in a #totalrequestride yet, come join us @crunchgym on Sunset! An intense, form-focused and fun workout! Hope to see you in class soon! Until then, in good health, tommy

Out with the old! In with the new! Oldies but goodies! Everything old is new again. So many things can be classified as old or new. But so much of today's fresh and new music is built upon or shaped and formed by the music of the past. Whether old music is sampled in new songs, remixed or covered by today's new artists, there is no denying that the music of today can be strongly influenced by the music and artists of the past. This can also be applied to workouts. It seems that there is always a new and fresh take on an old workout. Whether it be spinning, weight training or body sculpting classes, gyms, trainers and instructors are always working to have the newest and shiniest trends offered in their classes or instructions. However, if you boil it down, there is often the very same basic principles at play. The tried and true basics. The time-tested methods. And I won't even go into the applications of this thought process to people other than to say that the young, fresh-faced, "wet behind the ears" generation can certainly benefit from the experience and knowledge of the people that came before them. So, I guess what I want someone to be able to take away from this "gibberish" that I'm spewing forth, is that once again, there is so much to celebrate in finding the positive and beneficial aspects present in life. The young, the new, the creative, the bold, the shocking, the older, the vintage, the antique: all of these are valuable, helpful, beneficial, great, awesome, fun and exciting! So have a blast in life celebrating all of the old that is new again. There is always a reason to celebrate. Whether that reason is brand new or recycled; just out of the box or closer to having a foot in the grave; bright and shiny or needing a gentle rub to discover the possibilities that lie underneath; just remember to celebrate! Your life will be much better for it. Just don't sit down and let it pass you by! Get up, get out and workout! Ride with Tommy! I hope to see you in class soon! Until then, in good health, tommy

No (technical) glitches! Yes! This morning's #totalrequestride @crunchgym on Sunset was a blast! And on top of that, there were no technical glitches (neither caused by the user (me!) or those that are out of user control!) So a big "yay!" And yes, I am celebrating the fact that there were no technical glitches. Yes, glitches should be so rare that the lack of them should not be a reason to celebrate, but as most of you know by now, there is always something to celebrate! And isn't it much more fun to find the reasons to celebrate and then increase the happiness and positivity by sharing those reasons rather than focus on what can and does go wrong and bringing yourself and others down? It's very much like your workout. Instead of focusing on how difficult it can be or how much pain you go through when actually, physically going through your exercises, why not focus on the positive benefits of your workout? The results that you are going to or already have obtained? In my classes, you will often hear me talk of the positive aspects of class. And it is so important to feel the benefits of the positive energy that is created when you focus on the workout/the Ride along with everyone else in class instead of doing your own thing which very often can be very different from what the rest of the class is doing! That "doing your own thing" can be a huge distraction and can then be a very negative action. So, when everyone in class commits to the Ride/the workout, wouldn't you rather be a part of the positive energy and the positive change? Wouldn't you rather benefit from the positive energy and obtaining more results as a member of the class while making that commitment? I know I would. And I hope that the Ride with Tommy! riders would too! 'Cuz there is already so much in life that is out of our control and very often negative. Take every chance you get to focus on the positive. Celebrate the positive! See the glass as half full, not half empty! Share the positive with the people around you or the people that you meet everyday! Multiply that positive energy! It can spread exponentially! Wouldn't you rather be a part of something like that? You can! It's up to you! Just do it!

This morning's class was kinda special. There were a fewer number of people there than usual. So I decided to take a little different approach to the Threshold Ride today. We did the warm up. We worked hard to set our thresholds for the usual 3-minute period. But then, I went to each person in class, face to face, and asked them what was one thing they would like to specifically work on in class this morning. I gave everyone the option to opt-out if they wanted, but everyone participated! And it was an amazing experience! I LOVED the input! I had people say they wanted to work on their endurance. I had some say they wanted to work on their power. Some said they wanted to work on their bodies. I had one woman say that wanted to focus on her "me" time. I followed that up by asking her if she had kids. Yes, she did. A toddler and an infant less than a year old. Oh I get it! I totally get it! I even had someone say that they wanted to work on showing the guy that broke up with them yesterday what they were missing! Yes! It is that focus on yourself that is so vitally important, because a workout is truly just that, time to work on yourself. It is so important to take the time to provide yourself with that "me" time. To improve and strengthen yourself. To change your mental feeling and outlook. To change your physical body in a way that will make you feel better about you! And it can happen right here in the Ride with Tommy! @crunchgym Crunch Fitness - Sunset. But you have to take the time. And often it is not easy. But life is all about balance. You can give and give of yourself for hours and hours at a time during the day...to your kids...your husband or your wife...your boss...your co-workers...your friends. But unless you take the time to commit to being the best you that you can be, then you won't be able to give the others in your life the best you either! So which do you want to do? The classes are here. @crunchgym is here. @ridewithtommy is here. Make the effort to take the time to create a better you. The best you. Don't you want it? I know others want and deserve the best you that can be. You deserve it! Make it happen! Just do it! See you in class soon! Until then, in good health, tommy

What an awesome class! Thanks to everyone that was there and thanks for staying focused with some distractions at the beginning of class. I had such a great class planned. I wanted to try just a few different things. However, technology didn't have the same plans. The resulting bumps in getting started a couple of minutes late and slow transitions between videos and not being able to play all the videos I had planned, well, I was frustrated and disappointed. But you guys were awesome as always and I soon forgot all about any technical issues and had a great Ride with all of you! Especially when one of you asked for an additional song and almost the entire class agreed! I am almost never one to say no to an extra song! Bonus! And you know what is another bonus? The health and fitness benefits that you gain from staying focused and determined to get the best workout possible. And not just your physical health but your mental health as well. I am not a psychologist nor a psychiatrist (and I haven't even played one or the other on TV! lol!) but I can attest to the mental benefits that intense physical workouts provide. Throughout life, there are times when you need an extra push mentally. Whether it be reqarding family, friends, work or even your workouts, a Ride can help you push the stagnation, the distractions, the disappointments, the worry, or even the blahs out of the forefront of your mind and replace it with euphoria, pride, (good) exhaustion, (new...and better) focus, a positive outlook and a renewed determination to make the best you possible! Just like when you make the best of a less than great situation, you can make the best you possible whenever things work against you. Often, you will be surprised at how great things can turn out. Like I was in class this morning. So again, thank you to all of you! You continue to inspire me and push and challenge me to be a better instructor. So let's do it all again tomorrow! Sexy Spin at 7:00am, Thursday. Hope to see you there! Until then, in good physical and mental health, tommy

It is raining in Los Angeles! A lot! Yay! We definitely need it1 But that makes getting around in LA a little crazy. Thanks so much to everyone who braved the elements this morning and made it to the Peak Performance Ride @crunchgym on Sunset. We had a great Ride! A great workout! A great energy by everyone that was in the room! And we all committed, focused and challenged ourselves while pushing ourselves to the next level. While striving to reach our goals and obtain results. And while having fun! In the Peak Performance Ride, we tend to focus a little bit more on resistance work. Which will push your heart rate up higher. Which will make you burn more calories. Which, can in turn, make you burn more bodyfat! And again, all this while having fun! Did you just read that right? Yes you did! You can do so much good, working intensely, sweating like crazy, reaching the point that you think that you just can't do anymore, and still have fun! You can have a blast getting right on that beat with each and every pedal stroke! Moving your upper body right on the rhythm. Almost dancing while forcing your legs to push harder to get through the resistance. Getting stronger. Making a change in your body. Making a change in your mental perspective. Oh there is so much we can do. So, let's do it! Together. In the Ride with Tommy! Whether the weather calls for rain or sunshine, make plans now to be there and be prepared to make a positive difference in your life. And to have fun! Until then, in good health, tommy
