It is October already! Pumpkin Spice and a fall coolness is in the air! But not in the spin room! It's all hot and sweaty up in here! As it should be! What?!?! You haven't been coming to class lately? You say it is too easy to get caught up in classes now that school is back in session. Or in getting the kids to school (believe me, I hear you!). Or it's too easy to sleep in late as the sun is coming up a little later now and the days are getting shorter. Well, you've missed this morning's #totalrequestride track list that included the new @brunomars Bruno Mars single, #24kmagic. Or @pink Pink's "Just Like Fire" because as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, @crunchgym is donating $5 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for every new membership. Instructors are also wearing and playing "PINK"! as much as possible throughout the month. Or @twentyonepilots Twenty One Pilot's "Ride" which is perfect because, well, we are riding! And through no small coincidence, I played @pitbull Pitbull's "Play Hard" as I was wearing one of my favorite spin shirts emblazened with the words "Work Hard, Play Harder!" Oh yeah! And over the past few weeks, I have played @stevegrandmusic Steve Grand's "We Are The Night", remixed by Grammy award-winning DJ Dave Aude @daveaude as I was lucky enough to visit with Steve before he left town after playing at Disney Gay Days (and of course I am looking forward to seeing him again in just a few short weeks when he's back in LA attending Fred & Jason's Halloweenie @halloweenie_LA! And I have even ventured into the world of country music for some amazing cool down music, especially since my long-time friend Wyatt Earp (yes, that is his real name, and he's a real descendant of the original Wyatt Earp!). After moving to Nashville from Los Angeles just a few short years ago, he has already had @blakeshelton record one of his songs, "She's Got A Way With Words" (which Blake performed on The Voice's season finale last May!) And now @georgestrait has just recorded his song, "Goin' Goin' Gone". And then another friend and former @crunchgym member, @shanemcanally, produced the amazing country mashup and collaboration of 30 country music stars called "Forever Country" along with the accompanying video directed by the same Grammy award-winning director of @taylorswift13 Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" video! These are just a few examples of the amazing music and reasons why I choose my music that I have played in the past few weeks as fall fully descends upon us. As always, I try to choose music that is fun, motivating, and probably easily heard on your car radio or satellite stations! That's right, I try to build my class around a variety of music that will help you work hard, intensely even, and safely while focusing a great deal of attention on proper form. All so that you can obtain as much results as possible. Moving you as close as possible to realizing your goals. All of us. Together. On a Ride. Making a difference. Listening to great music. Thanks to everyone for their notes of concern. Yes, I was in an car accident on the way to teach class yesterday, Monday, September 19, 2016. I was just a few minutes away from Crunch, and Crunch was my first call after the accident and even before I exchanged information with the other driver. Fortunately, Guy B. was at the gym and was able to step right in and sub my class for me. Thanks Guy B! Also fortunately, no one was injured in the accident. Whew. There was quite an impact, but the damage was not too extensive (we were both still able to drive our cars). And finally, fortunately, it was not my fault. Whew again. I mean, I'm not glad that it was the other driver's fault. I really wish it would never have happened. And even if it isn't your fault nowadays, just the fact that you were in an accident is such a (figurative) pain with your insurance and repairs. Ugh. Well, I'm fine and ready to ride again! For those of you that have taken my classes over any length of time, you know that I like to celebrate the events and happenings in our lives that are positive. And in yesterday's Threshold Ride, we certainly had something positive to celebrate! Joelle celebrated her birthday and recovery from breast cancer! Two life events that are definitely worth celebrating! Happy birthday and congrats on beating cancer, Joelle! So happy for you and grateful to see you back in class! I look forward to riding with you for a long time to come!

Also, I announced in class both yesterday and this morning that Crunch has just introduced a 12-week Get Fit Challenge! I just signed up for it yesterday. Won't you join me? And as far as the music goes, well, you know that I always like to celebrate with music. Last week we observed Labor Day. So it should come as no surprise that I incorporated a few "work" related songs. My favorite is a mashup by DJ Andy Wu featuring songs that will make you sweat by Britney, Fifth Harmony, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliott, Jennifer Lopez, Olivia Newton-John, and many others. I hope you enjoyed it, too! And my current obsession is the new version of the Black Eyed Peas hit from 2003 retitled "#wheresthelove?". I love the way the song has been redone (almost more than I liked the original version!) The song and video are filled with guest appearances from so many of the hottest artists and other well-known figures of today including the amazing voices of Mary J. Blige, Andra Day, Usher, Jessie J, Nicole Scherzinger and Justin Timberlake as well as the brief flash of instantly recognizable faces of Lance Bass, Connie Britton, Quincy Jones, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and (former Texas A&M football player, former Dancing with the Star contestant, current Denver Bronco and last year's Super Bowl MVP) Von Miller! Unfortunately, this song's message is as relevant now as it was back in 2003 when the song was written following the horrible events of 9/11 in 2001. Fortunately, will.i.am has brought the message back and is committing all proceeds to his i.am.angel Foundation, a non-profit foundation that is transforming lives through education, inspiration and opportunity.

There's so much to celebrate in life. There is so much good in the world. Let's not get caught up in all that can go wrong. Let's focus on the positive, on what we can do to make life better for ourselves and for others! Work hard to create that positive energy in class which can lead to positive changes in yourself. Then, share that positive energy with others. We can all make a difference in the world. Let's make that difference a positive one! One that can improve your life and the lives of the people around you. I try to create the environment in my classes that is conducive to making positive change. I want riders to look forward to the Ride, to look forward to an intense workout. I also want riders to trust that the ride will be safe, form-focused and fun! That's right, an intense workout that is fun. I choose music that hopefully almost everyone in class may know or recognize (yes, songs with lyrics! words, not just beats!) Feel free to sing along! Having fun will make the time that you are working out move so much faster. Before you know it, class will be over and you will be feeling the results of an intense, form-focused and fun Ride! Celebrate those results! Share the positive energy! Celebrate your birthday! Work (and workout) hard so that you can enjoy life even more! I will do my best to help you make it happen! 18 years. I have had the honor, the pleasure, the job of teaching indoor cycling for 18 years! I taught my first class on August 2, 1998 at Todd Tramp's BodySculpting LA on the northeast corner of La Cienega Boulevard and Melrose Avenue. I worked behind the front desk there. I managed the gym (a personal training gym) and then managed the indoor cycling program. I started teaching there and since then have taught at many gyms across Los Angeles. Not long after that initial class, I started teaching at Crunch Fitness on the world famous Sunset Strip in Hollywood, CA, where I still teach today. I am thankful for Kendell Hogan who believed enough to hire me at Crunch, has had my back and still supports my instruction there today! I have gone on to teach at Equinox, Gold's, Sportivo, Meridien and Universal Studios. I have taught alongside Todd Tramp, Andrea Lawent (Made In LA Fitness), Debby Rocker, Janet Fitzgerald (SoulCycle), John Terlingo (Terlingo Cycle - Dallas, TX), Jim Barcena, Stacey Griffith (SoulCycle), Bob Harper (The Biggest Loser), Nick Hounslow (Cycle House, E! Television's "Hollywood Cycle"). I have led classes in which Nicole Kidman, Christina Applegate, Queen Latifah, Lisa Rinna, George Wendt, Angie Everhart, Ryan Seacrest, (just to name a few) were in attendance. And a lot has changed since that first class. I got married to the love of my life, Rich Vaughn. We have 8-year old twin boys, Aiden & Austin. I have gone from teaching 14-15 classes a week at 3-4 different gyms to currently teaching just 4 classes a week exclusively at Crunch Fitness - Sunset. But most of all, I am so proud and grateful to have had the opportunity to help people live happier, healthier lives. I stayed true to my beliefs as an instructor, believing that a focus on form and fun, safety and intensity, and a variety of challenges and music help to make the best class possible that produces the best and most results possible. When I started, I had no idea that 18 years later I would still be teaching. Now, I can't imagine my life having not been an instructor. I have made friendships that have lasted and will last a lifetime. I have learned, grown and changed for the better. And I'm not done yet. I have so many people that still inspire me. I still have goals to reach. There are still milestones to achieve. Thanks to everyone who has supported me along my journey. And if you haven't tried a class yet, what are you waiting for?!?!
